Hot weather, cool hair: Tips to protect women's strands from the summer sun

Fried or frizzed out? The summer sun is great to bask in but can ravage your hair. Whether you’re spending time in the pool or on the beach, basking in the sun or partaking in your favorite sport, your locks are going to need a little extra love.

For all you summer lovers out there, we have haircare tips, tricks and product recommendations so you can soak up the sun without worry of hair havoc.

Embrace your natural look

Summer is the time to let your hair down (literally) and let it do its thing! This means putting away your heat styling products, like flat irons, curling irons and blow dryers, and letting your hair do what it does best: look naturally lovely. Skipping the heat styling will help you avoid frizz and breakage since your hair is already experiencing heat from the air. And, if you’re in a humid climate, the work you put into heat styling will likely be foiled by the wet summer air. If you need a little control, you can try the Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum to smooth down your hair, and Paul Mitchell Extra-Body Sculpting Foam or TIGI Bed Head Small Talk to keep your hair from getting too unruly.

Protect before you style

If you will be styling your hair, make sure that it’s up to the challenge by protecting it from heat and other styling products. Incorporate a thermal protectant into your haircare routine to provide protection and manageability for your locks. Try a heat protectant like Paul Mitchell Hot Off The Press for a weightless barrier that helps fight the frizz.

Cover it up

When in doubt, accessorize! If you’ll be spending the day out in the sun and are concerned about sun damage to your hair, put on your favorite hat. This not only protects your hair, but also helps protect your ears and face from the sun.

Wash less often

Shampooing too frequently strips the natural oils from your hair. And with the sun and warm air already drying out your ‘do, you definitely don’t want to add to that. We recommend holding onto those natural oils by shampooing infrequently and using dry shampoo, like TIGI Bed Head Dirty Secret. The natural oils will help protect your hair from damage and keep frizz and breakage at bay.

Condition, condition, condition

Leave-in conditioner can be your best friend in the summer. Leave-in conditioner allows you to provide your hair with some extra moisture without washing it. We recommend Solutions by Great Clips Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner or Healthy Sexy Hair Tri-Wheat Leave-In Conditioner.

Don’t brush

Brushing causes breakage and, if your hair is already a little fragile from the summer heat, brushing isn’t going to do you any favors. If you need to smooth out tangles, try a wide-tooth comb to be gentler on your strands.

Try oils

Oils are a great product for fast frizz control without weighing your hair down. We love Healthy Sexy Hair Love Oil or Solutions by Great Clips Nourishing Oil to prevent breakage, fight frizz and add shine.

This summer enjoy the sun without fretting about your hair! Need some product advice or a quick summer trim? Head to your local Great Clips salon and ask your stylist to connect you with the best products for your hair type. Happy summer!
