1982
David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon establish Great Clips, Inc. and open the first Great Clips salon near the University of Minnesota.
Spring 1983
Ray Barton joins as an owner. Using his expertise in franchising, he helps grow the Great Clips hair salon brand with the goal of connecting customers with convenient, great haircuts near them.
Summer 1983
The first franchised Great Clips location opens.
1984
Rhoda Olsen joins Great Clips, Inc. part-time as a training consultant.
1987
Rhoda joins the company full-time as the vice president of human resources. Steve, David and Ray are named company presidents.
1990-2010
1993
The first Great Clips hair salon in Canada opens.
1997
Ray buys out his partners to become the majority shareholder. Great Clips reaches 1,000 hair salons.
1998
Rhoda is promoted to president.
2006
Great Clips marks 2,500 salon locations.
2010 to present
2011
Ray becomes chairman of the board and Rhoda is promoted to CEO. Charlie Simpson, formerly an executive vice president and the chief operations officer, becomes president.
2011
Great Clips marks 3,000 salon locations.
2011
Great Clips, Inc. launches the Great Clips app and Online Check-In.
2014
Charlie Simpson retires and Steve Hockett becomes president. Great Clips, Inc. launches Clip Notes.
2016
Great Clips marks 4,000 salon locations.
2017
Great Clips reaches 150 salons in Canada.
2018
Rhoda Olsen moves to vice chair of the board. Steve Hockett becomes CEO. Rob Goggins, the current COO, becomes president. Great Clips, Inc. launches haircut reminders via the Great Clips app.
2020
Great Clips, Inc. introduces ReadyNext texts as part of Online Check-In. Great Clips salons are now open in all 50 U.S. states.
2022
Yvonne Mercer becomes COO. The Great Clips app surpasses 20 million total downloads.
